I'm not sure what else to say about this besides Richard Seymour sees the next Tommy Maddox

It's great to see the Raiders quarterbacking situation keeps adding to the entire "Island of Broken Toys" concept they've ran with this season.

Too bad Jason Campbell isn't available yet...

Welcome to the Week In Review, where we categorically deny having an affair with Tiger Woods.

But we're willing to, if the price were right. )

The gutty, gritty, little noticed NFC East (/sarcasm) will keep its primetime exposure on December 27th as the Cowboys at Redskins game stays on NBC.

Denver at Philly moves to 4:15PM. Ravens at Steelers was protected and the NFL promised the Ravens that this game would not go to primetime (it has over the last few seasons and the Ravens wanted it played on Sunday afternoon).

This TL;DR had slight insight into why the league sports so many bad tacklers.

Yet, unintentional comedy struck mightily.

Quoted:

There used to be a time when ball carriers were easily differentiated -- you primarily had bruisers such as Jerome Bettis, elusive types such as Barry Sanders and hard-charging tough guys such as Emmitt Smith. Now you have more runners who possess all those traits (such as Peterson)

REALLY?

I think they're sorely mistaken on one trend in the NFL. Running backs are not getting more elusive. They're not more well-rounded, either. Adrian Peterson might have great agility, blazing speed, and enough power, but he is not as elusive as Sanders. He isn't as upfield-dazzling as Emmitt. He's definitely not as powerful as Bettis. Like Barry, Jerome, and Emmitt, he has enough power and speed to play on every down, but he's not on their level.

The article implies that RBs have improved. Yet, if you have a top halfback, you don't split carries with someone ... the top running back receives the majority. The 2nd HB only subs in when the premier back tires. The 2nd HB leaves when your top back catches his breath. With a top back in a balanced offense, there is no running back committee.

Instead, the reality shows that RBs are less-well-rounded than they were 10 years ago. To be an every-down back, you need enough power, agility, and speed to get 20 carries a game. Today? The backs are either too weak or not nimble enough for every down. You don't even see a lot of fullbacks anymore because they don't seem to block well enough to be useful.

I also found it amusing that the author included Curtis Lofton and Bernard Pollard. They might be solid tacklers, but Jeffri Chadiha should have just stayed with Patrick Willis and Ray Lewis for quotes.

Solid tackling may continue to be an endangered species, but I'm more concerned with the lost art of accurate estimation of athletes.

SUNDAY'S SHOWDOWN REMINDS DALLAS OF OTHER SHIT
DECISION MAKING

Norv Turner/Wade Phillips

IRVING, Texas -- Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had a tough choice to make three years ago. And unless the Cowboys experience their first playoff success in more than a decade, it's a choice that will continue to haunt Jones.

After Bill Parcells walked away following the 2006 season, Jones worked through a list of replacements that included future NFL head coaches Tony Sparano, Todd Haley and Mike Singletary. But Jones wanted someone who had experience as a head coach and that's why Wade Phillips and Norv Turner were the finalists.

Of course, Jones had a close relationship with Turner because the coach had helped guide the Cowboys to two Super Bowls as the offensive coordinator in the '90s. The eventual Hall of Fame quarterback on those teams, Troy Aikman, attributes much of his success to Turner and he lobbied Jones on behalf of his close friend.
shoulda, coulda, woulda )

tl;dr but HOW THE FUCK didn't i know we passed on norv!?!?!?

ETA: thank y'all for reminding me turner ain't no honor student. the grass is always greener in december...

I don't know if anyone is watching the game, let alone noticed, but when the Browns (arguably) scored a touchdown just before halftime, the scoreboard on the TV flashed up 'FIELD GOAL!' and added three points to their score. And it took quite a while for them to get that straightened out. Probably couldn't find the 'TOUCHDOWN!' graphic for the Browns...

That's right, they're so bad (probably couldn't find the end zone if they were tied to the goal post) that even the television graphics people just assume any score must be a field goal.

Go Browns! You still have plenty of time to lose this game...

Welcome back to special teams Tony Romo. Dallas Cowboys' Romo to resume role as holder. Because it worked out so well in the past:

Romo had a very good game against the Giants on Sunday. Why would they mess with that?
